Explore one of the largest Garden regenerations in Britain.
The jewel in the crown of the Trentham Estate, the historic Italian Gardens are one of the most impressive, significant and important garden projects in Europe.
Whilst the magnificent Italian
Gardens remain true to Charles Barry’s original creation for the Duke of
Sutherland, this is much more than a conventional restoration project. The
team at Trentham are breathing new life into the Gardens, with design and
Iconic perennial planting, with help from award winning
garden designers Tom Stuart-Smith and Piet Oudolf. This contemporary fresh
new look is apparent from the moment you enter the gardens, crossing the
impressive and avant-garde bridge which spans the River Trent.
The Lake in the middle of the Estate was enlarged to its current size, over 1 mile in length, between 1759 and 1780 by the famous landscape designer, Capability Brown, on behalf of the estate’s owner, The Duke of Sutherland.
The stunning mile long lake is now enclosed within the Italian Gardens, so you can enjoy the tranquillity of an easy stroll around the lake to the Gardens. For prices please click here
Or why not take a gentle cruise on board the Miss Elizabeth passenger boat. Enjoy beautiful views from the lake on our unique ecologically friendly electrically powered catamaran. Or sit astride the ‘Trentham Fern’, Trentham’s own miniature railway, and chug along the side of the lake and back. For times & prices for the Lake Activities please click here
Hundreds
of thousands of choice perennials and bulbs provide breathtaking displays
throughout the year, in a garden that only closes on Christmas Day! The
objective is to create a garden that changes throughout the seasons,
rewarding visitors with different scenes, colours and experiences each time they visit.

There is something for everyone – on the Eastern side of the Gardens you will find wild and colourful prairies for you to stroll around. And on the Western side you will find something for all the family including 12 show gardens, woodland walks, tree trails, bird hides, a very engaging children’s play area and Britain’s first Barefoot Walk.
