Job Description

Title:               Gardener

Basic Pay:      £11,000 - £13,000 pa depending on experience (excluding possibility of overtime and company bonus).

Hours:             40 hours per week

Holidays:        20 per annum (excluding national bank holidays)

Training

Allowance:     Up to a maximum of 10 paid days per annum will be made available for training

Weekend rota:                Position expected to contribute to weekend rota.   

Key Relationships:-

• An integral member of the Garden Team (currently comprising 12 staff).

• Overall strategic management with Garden Manager.

• Day to day management with Assistant Garden Manager.

• Daily reporting to West Pleasure Garden Supervisor.

Key Skills / Experience:-

• A reasonable level of plant knowledge. Keen to learn and develop understanding more.

• Practical skills in plant and border maintenance.

• A background in pedestrian machinery usage:- mowers, strimmers, hedgecutters, &c….

• A thorough understanding, and working knowledge, of current Health and Safety legislation.

• An ability to work alone or as a member of a team (i.e/ to work with other gardeners, students, volunteers and contractors as may be required). Flexible approach.

• A good communicator. Able to receive and pass on instructions as necessary.

• An individual who has worked in a ‘similar environment’ preferable but not essential (i.e/ an historic garden).

Key Qualifications:-

• PA1 and PA6 in chemical usage advantageous.

• Horticultural Qualification essential.

Key Responsibilities:-

• Maintenance, Presentation and Development across the West Pleasure Garden.

• Plant management in line with garden policies.

• Co-ordinate and lead both volunteers / students as appropriate throughout routines and tasks.
